How the US market differs
The US is the world's deepest pool of buyers and investment. Foreign direct investment in the US reached USD 5.86 trillion at the end of 2025, according to the Bureau of Economic Analysis. That depth is also the trap. Foreign companies arrive thinking they are entering one market and find several.
- States, not one country. The 2025 SelectUSA Investor Guide says a company "may register in any state" and is governed by the laws of that state. Taxes, incentives, licensing and employment rules vary state by state.
- Long enterprise sales cycles. Large US buyers run procurement, security and legal reviews. In my experience, without a reference customer a first enterprise deal can take a year or more.
- Partner channels decide reach. Resellers, systems integrators, distributors and alliance partners already own the buyer relationships you need.
Nobody in America buys from a stranger. They buy from the partner they already trust, so start there.
US market entry routes compared
| Route | Best for | Upfront cost | Control | Main risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Direct export | Testing demand with a few named buyers | Low | Medium | Slow trust-building from abroad |
| Distributor or reseller | Physical products and established categories | Low to medium | Low to medium | Your brand becomes one of many in their catalogue |
| Channel or alliance partner | Software, services and solutions sold into enterprises | Medium | Medium | Partner priorities change; needs active management |
| US subsidiary | Companies with first customers and a US hire plan | Medium to high | High | Burn before pipeline; wrong first state |
| Acquisition or joint venture | Buying a team, customers or licences at once | High | High (acquisition) or shared (JV) | Integration, diligence and CFIUS review where relevant |
My default for most foreign companies is a channel or alliance partner first, then a subsidiary once three or more US customers are signed.
SelectUSA and state economic development
The federal government helps more than most founders realize. SelectUSA, part of the US Department of Commerce, offers free services to firms, including introductions to economic development organizations (2025 Investor Guide). In 2021 SelectUSA reported that it had facilitated more than USD 84B in inbound investment since its launch (trade.gov).
The SelectUSA Investment Summit is the best single week to meet state teams. The May 2026 summit drew more than 5,500 people, including about 2,700 international business leaders and over 1,100 US economic developers, and the 2027 summit runs 2 to 5 May in National Harbor, Maryland (trade.gov). SelectUSA also maintains a State Business Incentives Database.
How to start a business in the USA as a non-citizen
Foreign persons can own a US business without US citizenship, a green card or a work visa, but ownership alone does not authorize anyone to work in the US. A business corporation is the most common entity type for foreign investors, and you register with the IRS for a Federal Employer Identification Number (2025 Investor Guide). Acquisitions of some US businesses may fall under CFIUS review. This is general information, not legal or immigration advice; use licensed US counsel.
Building a US pipeline: partners, channel, enterprise sales
How to find buyers in the USA, and a business partner who can reach them, is the real question behind most US market entry consulting. My sequence:
- Name 30 target accounts in one segment and one or two states.
- Map who already sells to them: integrators, distributors, consultancies, associations.
- Pick three partners whose customers overlap your target list, and build a joint offer with each.
- Close one reference customer before you scale headcount.
- Then hire a US seller who can take the reference to the next ten accounts.
Entering the US from India, Canada and the Gulf
From India
Indian IT, healthcare and manufacturing firms often arrive with credible US offers. What they usually lack is the first warm enterprise introduction and a US partner who will put their name on the proposal. I come at this as someone born in India who now helps sign US software deals.
From Canada
Canadian companies expanding to the US have proximity and familiarity, and Canada is already a heavy investor: Canadian multinationals posted the second-largest increase in US direct investment in 2025, USD 39.2B (BEA). The mistake I see is treating the US as a bigger Ontario. Pick a state and a segment as if it were a new country. If you are going the other way, see Canada market entry.
From the Gulf
Gulf groups enter with capital and patience. The White House describes a UAE commitment to a 10-year, USD 1.4 trillion investment framework in the US (White House). For principals and family offices, see my guide to UAE investment in the US.

How to start, and what it costs
A wrong partner or distributor contract costs a year. The fit call costs USD 500.
My fit-first promise: if I decline your file, your USD 500 comes back in full. If I take it, every dollar is credited to your engagement.

Frequently asked questions
What is a US market entry strategy?
A US market entry strategy is the plan for how a foreign company wins its first US customers. It chooses the segment, the first state or states, the entry route (export, distributor, channel partner, subsidiary or acquisition) and the partners who reach your buyers. A good one names target accounts and ends in signed agreements, not a slide deck.
How do I enter the US market as a foreign company?
Pick one segment and one or two states, then choose a route. Most foreign firms do best entering through a channel partner or distributor that already sells to their buyers, then opening a US subsidiary once a few customers are signed. Use SelectUSA's free services and state economic development teams for location and incentive questions.
Can a non-citizen start a business in the USA?
Yes. The SelectUSA Investor Guide says foreign persons can own a US business without US citizenship, a green card or a work visa. Owning the company does not by itself authorize you to work in the US, so visas are a separate question. You register the company in a state of your choice and obtain an Employer Identification Number from the IRS.
How do I find a business partner or buyers in the USA?
Start with a list of 30 target accounts, then map who already sells to them: integrators, distributors, consultancies and associations. Approach the three partners whose customers overlap your list most, with a joint offer rather than a request for help. Warm introductions shorten the cycle, which is the part of US market entry services I deliver personally.
How should a Canadian company expand to the US?
Treat the US as a new market, not a bigger version of your home province. Choose a state and a segment, find a US partner with buyers in it, and sign a reference customer before hiring. Canada is already a major investor in the US: Canadian multinationals posted the second-largest increase in US direct investment in 2025, according to BEA.
What does US market entry consulting cost with you?
A 15-minute fit call is USD 500, credited in full against any engagement within 30 days and refunded if I decline the file. My 90-day advisory seat is USD 30,000 a month, and I take three to four seats a quarter. For partner and buyer outreach only, Network King campaigns start from USD 30,000.
